Dortmund Christmas Market
Dortmund can claim one of the biggest Christmas markets in Germany, with over 300 stalls packed around a gigantic Christmas tree creation that stands 45 metres tall – reputed to be the biggest in the world. Made up of 1,700 individual fir trees, its 13,000 lights bathe the Christmas proceedings in a seasonal glow.
Every day there is a colourful show programme by the Alter Markt Theatre Company and a puppet or magic show to keep the children happy.
Once the shopping for handicrafts like seasonal wood carvings, Christmas decorations and unusual toys is completed, shoppers can relax with a glass of hot mulled wine at one of the outdoor bars.
As in previous years the Dortmund Christmas Market will once again be catering for all tastes with good solid dishes like sausages and Westphalian grilled ham as well as roasted almonds, pancakes and many other lip-smacking delicacies.

Hohensyburg Casino is for those who fancy a flutter. Every year more than a million people try their luck here at Germany's most money-spinning casino. Everything revolves around playing: even the architecture reflects the theme. The casino has three floors and offers everything from classic casino games to "Las Vegas World" and a slot machine hall.
If you favour a cosier atmosphere, simply drop in at one of the countless pubs; after all, Dortmunders are not only football experts but also dedicated upholders of the Westphalian beer tradition. Alternatively, tourists may relax in one of the town’s "green oases": extensive forests, meadows, fields and parks cover almost half of the city’s 280 square kilometres, the many green areas offering outstanding recreational and leisure facilities.
