Wuerzburg's traditional Christmas Market has a long history that
stretches back several hundred years. Viewed as one of the most
atmospheric in Germany, the Wuerzburg Christmas Market consists of
beautifully decorated wooden booths illuminated by the soft glow of
Christmas lighting.
Here
in the old capital of the Prince Bishops, buildings such as the
gothic chapel of Saint Mary's, the rococo mansion of Falkenhaus and
the historic courtyard of the Town Hall provide a wonderful setting
for a terrific seasonal display. The air is filled with spicy smells
from innumerable decorated stalls and the sound of traditional
Christmas songs. Performances of the Nativity story fill the Oberer
Markt (Upper Market) on advent Sundays at 4pm. The Rococo Falkenhaus
offers mulled wine and arts and crafts, as well as delicious
regional produce.
At
the weekend Wuerzburg offers a special kind of transportation - the
Christmas Express. Commuting between the main station and the
Sanderau district through the inner city, it provides access to all
the top shopping areas. When you see a tram looking like a Christmas
tree, you've found it.
Würzburg is an ancient episcopal seat and a vibrant
university town with a baroque, distinctly southern feel. It
is in an idyllic setting surrounded by vineyards and is
defined by its architectural splendours that reflect a range
of epochs. Art, culture and Franconian wine are a way of
life in Würzburg – they impart a Mediterranean joie de
vivre.
Würzburg's main places of interest are the magnificent
prince bishops' Residenz Palace, an impressive example of
Mediterranean baroque architecture, and the mighty
Marienberg Citadel. The works of famous artists such as
Tilman Riemenschneider, Balthasar Neumann and Giovanni
Battista Tiepolo can be seen everywhere, and the tomb of
medieval minnesinger, Walther von der Vogelweide, is also
here. A glass of delicious Franconian wine is just the thing
after a tour of the old town.
Famous vineyard sites
and prestigious wine
estates have established
Würzburg's reputation as
the heart of the
Franconian wine region.
Traditional wine taverns
and quaint bars serving
hearty Franconian fare
are the ideal place to
stop and rest a while.
