Ulm lies
on the Danube in the scenic Swabian Alb region. It is known for its
cathedral and its university. Albert Einstein, the great scientist,
was born in Ulm in 1879 but only lived there for a short time.
Wilhelmsburg Castle on Michelsberg hill is a legacy from Ulm's days
as a fortified stronghold.
With
its spire of 161.53 metres, Ulm Minster is the town's dominating
landmark. It is the tallest church spire in the world. The
observation platform offers stunning panoramic views of Ulm and the
surrounding area. The 15th-century choir stalls inside the minster
are also worthy of note.
A
walk through the picturesque old quarter is like stepping back in
time and many of its buildings date right back to the end of the
17th century. Close by is the historical armoury with its impressive
Renaissance portal and intriguing Einstein fountain on the
forecourt. |
