Rostock, the almost 800 year old Hanseatic town, has
retained much of its original charm and today, together with
the seaside resort of Warnemünde, has a diverse cultural
scene. This vibrant and cosmopolitan university and port
town has a historical centre with typical north German brick
architecture and a tangible maritime atmosphere.
Rostock's two most important churches are located in its
centre - St. Mary's has an astronomical clock dating from
1472 and from the tower of St. Peter's there is a good view
of the old quarter and the town harbour. The historic town
hall is on Neuer Markt square. The main university building
is in the middle of the pedestrianised area.
Rostock is also a great place to enjoy some retail therapy,
with the historical town centre being a particularly
pleasant place to browse and shop. Many stores have taken up
residence in the historical town houses and old warehouses.
There are plenty of cafés and restaurants when it's time to
take a break. |
