Passau Christmas Market and Cathedral

Passau Christmas Market

The Passau Christmas Market or better known as Christkindlmarkt is set in the old historic town centre of Passau against the glorious backdrop of St. Stephen's Cathedral, it offers a wide variety of festive themed fun. About 70 selected little stalls will show and sell special Christmas goods, presents, arts and crafts. A wealth of Christmas specialities and food like Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Glühwein and Bratwurst (fried sausage) is also available. The Market is easy to reach with the Christmas Market Express and during the ride passengers will be able to enjoy passing through the charming old quarter and city centre of Passau. Both traditional and contemporary cribs will point the way through the city to the Christmas Market. To get to know the city sights more closely, the Passau Tourist Information Office offers daily city tours at midday. Cultural highlights include a concert by Germany's most famous choir, the Regensburger-Domspatzen, held at St.Stephan's Cathedral on 7th of December. For those who miss the event there will be concerts on the world's biggest cathedral organ every Wednesday and Saturday from noon to 12.30pm . Added to all this, 6 m³ of snow will be guaranteed every day, in order to make the visit to the Christmas Market a perfect experience for young and old alike. For the little ones, a daily program has been arranged in which they can make themselves a wide range of different articles. Whether it is candle-dipping or home-made decorations for the Christmas tree, the children’s eyes are guaranteed to glow with delight. An ‘angel’s postal service’ will round off the exciting experience for the young ones.

About the Town of Passau

One of the world’s seven most beautiful cities, said the great traveller and scientist Alexander von Humboldt, and it would be difficult to find a handsomer location than the one Passau enjoys at the confluence of the rivers Danube, Inn and Ilz, on the Austrian border.

Passau is a jewel of a town, with its beautiful and historic city centre full of narrow, winding streets and alleyways dominated by a massive, mainly Baroque cathedral containing the largest church organ in the world (17,774 pipes and 233 stops) offering regular concerts in the main season.

The Passau Glass Museum possesses one of the world’s largest collections of Bohemian glass - some 20,000 pieces. The annual Passau European Weeks festival (June-August) offers a wide range of musical events, whilst the “Passauer Kabarettage“ offers sparkling cabaret of quality.

By the nature of its unique location, Passau is ideal for river cruising - within Germany or even beyond, to such famous places as Linz and Vienna. Passau is also a real paradise for those who enjoy walking or cycling.

Idyllic Beer Gardens, cosy inns and numerous street cafés with their wonderful atmosphere ensure an unforgettable stay in Passau.
