Mainz Christmas Market

Every year the historic market square in Mainz turns into a beautiful spectacle of lights. The air is scented with a distinctive aroma of Christmas, cocktailed with the essence of roast almonds, gingerbread, hot chestnuts and mulled wine. Large and small visitors gladly let themselves be enchanted by this pre-Christmas atmosphere. On a stroll through the Mainz Christmas Market, the stress and hectic pace of everyday life are quickly forgotten. Against the imposing back-drop of the over thousand year old Cathedral of St. Martin, showmen and craftsmen offer Christmas specialities and original presents. People saunter leisurely past festively decorated stands, collecting many suggestions and ideas for the perfect Christmas present. Home-made Advent garlands and straw stars, Christmas tree decorations, wooden toys, carvings, ceramics, candles and much more are on offer. A particularly vivid representation of the Christmas story is the hand-carved crib which has been standing in front of the Romanesque St. Gotthard's chapel next to the cathedral since 1981. The life-sized figures made of lime wood are unique in Europe and do not just impress children. Also made of wood, but much larger still, is the eleven metre (36') high Christmas pyramid from the Ore Mountains in eastern Germany. Apart from the typical figures, such as an angel and Santa Claus, figures from the history of the city of Mainz are also represented. Thus Gutenberg and the Roman commander Drusus also go round in the circle here. You cannot overlook the pyramid, it stands directly at the centre of Höfchen square.

About the City of Mainz

Mainz, the charming capital of Rhineland-Palatinate is ideally located at the confluence of the Rhine and Main. The town has a certain savoir vivre, a unique ambience and a cosmopolitan outlook. Whether you come to Mainz as a tourist or to attend one of Mainz's numerous festivals, you cannot fail to be captivated by the open, friendly atmosphere of the town and its people. You feel it wherever you go: wandering through the market or the lovingly restored old town or strolling along the banks of the river Rhine.

A number of impressive buildings, monuments and museums serve as reminders of the town's colourful history. Magnificent baroque buildings, palaces and the imposing cathedral date back to the time when the Prince Electors ruled here. With Augustinerstrasse, a vibrant shopping street and heart of the old town, and the picturesque Kirschgarten and Leichhof squares, the old quarter is an ideal starting point for a stroll around the town.

Situated in the old quarter of Mainz is the Gutenberg Printing Museum which was founded in 1900, on the 500th anniversary of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. In this printing treasure trove, visitors can explore various sections on all aspects of historic and modern printing technology, including details of different book designs, graphic solutions, posters, paper types and general development of fonts. The highlight of the exhibition, of course being, a copy of the original first ever set of Bibles printed.
