The old town of Kempten is located in the centre of the Alpine
Allgäu region, in the southern most holiday region of
Germany.
On warm summer evenings, Town Hall Square with its many
street cafés will remind you of a vibrant Italian piazza; in
the German winter it is a picturesque setting for its
beautiful Christmas market.
Kempten has a history of over 2,000 years, to travel back in
time you can
visit the "Archaeological Cambodunum Parc", here you can
really discover how the Romans used to live. The Cambodunum
Parc, which is just across the river Iller from Kempten, is
quite sizeable and features three sections of history. The
first is a Gallo Roman Temple District from the original
Roman settlement, with partial reconstruction. The next is
the Small Thermae, part of the Roman governor’s palace. The
third section is part of the original Forum and Market
Basilica from the Roman town.
An other
significant highlight of Kempten is the Duke Abbots
Residence.
Here the elegant rococo state apartments in the Residence
were used by the prince on ceremonial occasions. The
impressive apartments, include a large waiting room, an
audience chamber, day salon and bedrooms which are all in
late regency style, while its exquisite throne room is
rococo.
Kempten is also a great central shopping centre for the
whole region with many small specialised shops to big
shopping malls. |
