About the Town of Hildesheim
Only 30 kilometres south of Hannover, Hildesheim has been a
cultural centre between the Harz and Heath for over a 1,000
years.
Of the city's five Romanesque churches, the cathedral and
the St. Michael’s Church, symbolising Bishop Bernward's
creative powers, are included in UNESCO’s “World Heritage of
Humanity”.
Internationally famous works of art from the
Ottonian era are especially precious items in the sacral
collections of the Dom-Museum and the cathedral treasury.
At the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum, fascinating collections
of ancient Egyptian and ancient
Peruvian art can be seen.
The historic market square is one of the most beautiful old
market-places in Germany. Its special highlight is the
reconstructed Knochenhauer-Amtshaus (former butchers' guild
hall), where city history and hospitality are combined under
one roof. |
