Duesseldorf Christmas Market

Every year Düsseldorf's Christmas market opens its "gingerbread houses" not far from Königsallee. Until 5 January Corneliusplatz has a huge outdoor ice rink offering fun for all the family - ice skating is free and there are instructors and childcare facilities. A great way to work off that excess "Christmas energy".

Düsseldorf in Advent is an exciting mix of Christmas market and shopping. Around the Königsallee, the new Sternchenmarkt and five other theme markets along the most popular shopping streets are waiting to be discovered.

In the pre-Christmas season, a stroll through Düsseldorf’s centre is a wonderful experience. Atmospheric Christmas markets with individual themes are staged at different places in the lively city centre: this year, the Sternchenmarkt has its premiere at Stadtbrückchen, where giant crystals and twinkling stars bathe sky-blue market stalls in the light of an impressive winter landscape.

On Marktplatz in front of the historic town hall, numerous nostalgic huts offer arts and crafts. The Engelchenmarkt in art-nouveau stylms the attention on Heinrich-Heine-Platz in the Old Town. On Flinger Strasse, Christmas ware is presented in small hand-painted reproductions of historic middle-class houses.

Schadowplatz is particularly family-friendly with a merry-go-round and special activities for children. XXL-sized Santa-Claus hats, reindeers and coloured lights adorn the huts on Schadowstraße.

A walk along the world-famous Königsallee is particularly worthwhile. Here a thousand brilliant lights illuminate the giant chestnut trees lining the boulevard.

About the City of Duesseldorf

Düsseldorf's elegant side is typified by the upmarket Königsallee shopping street, while the Gehry buildings in Media Harbour represent modern Düsseldorf. There are more than 260 bars and restaurants in the old quarter – plenty of opportunity for sampling Düsseldorf's top-fermented altbier and seeing how the people of the Rheinland have a good time. With outstanding museums, theatres, concert halls and galleries, Düsseldorf also has an international reputation as a centre for art and culture.

Worth seeing in Düsseldorf are.
  • The Königsallee, locally known as the ‘Kö’ boulevard, it is the perfect place for some exclusive shopping or just to be seen.
  • The Old Town of Düsseldorf is a place that has to be seen to be believed, with its many historical buildings and over 260 pubs and bars it is “The World’s longest bar”.
  • Rhine Riverbank Promenade connects the Old Town and the Rhine, with magnificent views, attractive restaurants plus it is a good starting point for river cruises on the Rhine.
