Coburg is a lively town, located in the very north of
Bavaria, with a wealth of tradition and history. A history
which is very closely linked to the British Royal Family,
thanks to the marriage in 1840, of Queen Victoria to Prince
Albert, son of Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Queen
Victoria herself remained a member of the House of Hanover.
The Royal
heritage is still preserved here in Coburg today, especially
at the palace of Ehrenburg, with its fine state apartments,
and
beautifully landscaped parks and gardens.
Coburg itself is an idyllic small town with many stylishly
restored Franconian gabled houses and medieval alleyways.
Just outside
Coburg lies one of its greatest attractions. Here, towering
above the town, is the Veste, the largest fortified castle
in Southern Germany. Martin Luther translated much of the
Bible here, thereby creating the basis of modern German. The
castle also houses a world famous copper-plate engraving
collection, the biggest collection of arms in Germany and
one of the largest and finest collections of glass in
Europe.
